I. Principles of Plasma Surface Treatment
The energy of particles within the plasma typically ranges from a few to over ten electron-volts (eV). This energy level exceeds the bond energy of polymer materials (also ranging from a few to over ten eV), making it sufficient to break the chemical bonds of organic macromolecules and form new ones; however, it is far lower than that of high-energy ionizing radiation, meaning the process affects only the material's surface without compromising the properties of the bulk substrate.
In a low-temperature plasma existing in a non-thermodynamic equilibrium state, electrons possess high energy capable of breaking chemical bonds on the material's surface and enhancing chemical reactivity (surpassing that of thermal plasma), while neutral particles remain at near-room temperature. These characteristics create ideal conditions for the surface modification of heat-sensitive polymers.
Low-temperature plasma treatment induces various physical and chemical changes on the material surface—such as etching to increase roughness, the formation of a dense cross-linked layer, or the introduction of oxygen-containing polar groups—thereby improving properties such as hydrophilicity, adhesion, dyeability, biocompatibility, and electrical performance. Processing under optimal conditions significantly alters the surface morphology and introduces various oxygen-containing groups, transforming the surface from a non-polar, difficult-to-bond state into one that is polar, hydrophilic, and easy to bond, which facilitates adhesion, coating, and printing.
Applying high-frequency, high-voltage alternating current (AC) across the electrodes generates a gas glow discharge in the air gap between them, creating a plasma zone. As electrons move, they continuously collide with gas molecules, generating a large number of new electrons; when these electrons reach the anode, they accumulate on the dielectric surface, thereby effecting surface modification.
