ISO 13927 EN ISO 17554 Mass Loss Calorimeter
Combustion Mass Loss Rate Tester | Calorimetry Test Device | Heat Release Test Machine
Standards & Application
Standards: EN ISO 13927; EN ISO 17554
Application: Used to evaluate the mass loss rate of products under test conditions
Product Overview
The Mass Loss Calorimeter incorporates the full fire-modeling capabilities of the Cone Calorimeter, offering a cost-effective solution for studying ignitability and mass loss. Under appropriate flue conditions, users can conduct thermal exposure studies, observing sample reactions and measuring mass changes under the same exposure conditions as the Cone Calorimeter.
A thermocouple built into the smoke exhaust duct allows for the calculation of heat release. When combined with other Cone Calorimeter components, the Mass Loss Calorimeter can function as a partial or complete Cone Calorimeter system.
Testing Methodology
The Mass Loss Calorimeter is designed to evaluate the mass loss rate of products under specific test conditions using a conical radiant heater. The mass loss rate is determined by measuring the specimen's mass and performing numerical calculations. Time to ignition (sustained flaming) is also measured during the test.
Mass loss rate can serve as an indirect indicator of the heat release rate for many products; however, for certain products with high moisture content, the correlation between mass loss rate and heat release rate is not strong. Such products require testing in accordance with ISO 56601 to accurately assess heat release.
System Components

Key Features & Benefits
Fire model complies with ISO 56601 Cone Calorimeter specifications
Fire model constructed from stainless steel for long service life
Three control thermocouples on the conical heater maintain accurate heat flux
Special split-shutter mechanism minimizes radiant heat impact on sample support system
Lever mechanism for manual positioning of spark assembly with safe operation microswitches
Sample weight measured using strain-gauge load cell with rapid electronic tare function
Load cell enclosed in protective housing to minimize temperature fluctuation effects
Integrated control unit with power switch, ignition switch, load cell, and cone heater
Selectable weight range function (0-500g) to optimize performance
Designed for future upgrades to full cone calorimeter system
Operational Capabilities
When used under appropriate conditions, the Mass Loss Calorimeter allows users to conduct thermal exposure studies under the same precise exposure conditions as the Cone Calorimeter, while observing specimen response and measuring mass changes. An exhaust stack equipped with a thermopile can also be added to the unit. Once calibrated using a methane burner, the thermopile output can be used to quantify heat release.
