Product Introduction
The LR-Z251 is a high-precision slot-die coating test machine meticulously developed by LONROY. Designed primarily for slot-die extrusion coating, it supports a wide range of applications, including organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), conductive polymers, nanowires and nanotubes, 2D materials, OLEDs and PeLEDs, perovskite solar cells, electrolytes and electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
Conventional laboratory coaters often struggle to produce nanoscale films due to limitations such as doctor blade adjustments and substrate flatness issues. In contrast, this slot-die coater utilizes various substrate platform options—including inspection-grade granite, vacuum suction, precision mold steel, and glass platforms—and employs a non-contact slot-die coating head. Wet film thickness is precisely controlled by balancing three factors: feed pressure, slot-die gap width, and the clearance between the coating head and the substrate. Additionally, the high-end version of the machine features advanced control software.
The system incorporates a height adjustment and feedback mechanism, significantly enhancing coating precision and uniformity. It is capable of achieving wet film thicknesses as low as 1 micron and dry film thicknesses at the nanometer scale, and is widely used in domestic optical film laboratories during the R&D and prototyping stages.
Product Features
1. High integration—Integrating the coater into an inline system can boost production output and significantly reduce the overall manufacturing costs of thin-film electronic devices.
2. Simplicity and reliability—Slot-die coating is a highly reliable technique for producing uniform wet films, with thickness variations of less than 2% over long coating runs. Coating thickness is controlled by adjusting the solution flow rate and substrate speed. The probability of coating defects can be reduced by optimizing specific geometric parameters without altering the coating thickness.
3. Suitability for research applications—Although slot-die coating is a powerful technology, its use in thin-film electronics R&D remains limited. As it is primarily an industrial technology, even the simplest systems are expensive, given that manufacturers target the industrial sector rather than academia. Furthermore, conventional coating systems are often large and complex, making them unsuitable for researchers just beginning to develop thin-film deposition processes. Compact and easy to operate, this slot-die coater is designed for laboratory use, enabling researchers to optimize solvent formulations and process parameters without requiring extensive print runs. Slot-die coating facilitates the translation of research findings into practical, large-scale applications.
4. Controllable film thickness—Slot-die coating is a "pre-metered" coating technique; the wet film deposition thickness depends solely on the solution flow rate, substrate speed, and coating width. By factoring in solution concentration and material density, the dry film thickness can be determined using the following equation:
d = (f / (v w)) * (c / ρ)
This equation governs the thickness of the slot-die coating, where *d* is the coating thickness (cm), *f* is the flow rate (cm³/min), *v* is the coating speed (cm/min), *w* is the coating width (cm), *c* is the solution concentration (g/cm³), and *ρ* is the dry film density (g/cm³).
5. Defect-free coating – Slot-die coating relies on the formation of a stable coating bead. This bead consists of upstream and downstream menisci that must remain anchored to the edges of the slot-die head. The bead is stabilized by the balance between the flow from the coating head and the viscous flow at the substrate surface. Users can adjust various parameters—such as solution flow rate, substrate speed, coating head height, solution wettability, and slot-die channel thickness—to modify these competing flows. By operating within the stable coating process window, these parameters can be adjusted in various ways to produce defect-free films.
