How to Clean and Maintain a Rotational Viscometer

As a core instrument for measuring fluid viscosity in industries such as lubricants, paints, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and adhesives, the rotational viscometer requires proper cleaning and maintenance. These practices are essential for ensuring measurement accuracy (up to ±1%) and data reliability, while also extending the instrument's service life. Adhering to standardized procedures ensures stable operation across a measurement range of 10 to 2,000,000 mPa·s, in compliance with the “JJG 1002-2005 Verification Regulation for Rotational Viscometers”.

I. Daily Cleaning: Prompt and Proper Care to Prevent Damage

Clean the instrument immediately after each measurement to prevent sample residue from drying and compromising accuracy.

Cleaning the Spindle (Core Component): Once the instrument is powered off and the spindle has come to a complete stop, carefully remove it (spindles 1–4). Select an appropriate solvent based on the nature of the sample—such as ethanol, acetone, or a specialized cleaning solution—to soften any residue. Gently wipe the spindle with a soft cotton cloth or lens-cleaning tissue. Never use hard objects to scrape the surface, as scratches can lead to measurement errors. For samples containing particles (e.g., paints), an ultrasonic cleaner may be used (for 3–5 minutes). For highly adhesive samples, consider pre-cooling the material to facilitate the removal of residue. After cleaning, allow the spindle to air-dry or use a cool-air stream, then store it in its designated protective case to prevent impact or deformation.

Cleaning the Main Unit and Accessories: Disconnect the power supply. Wipe the exterior housing and display screen with a soft, damp (well-wrung) cloth, ensuring no liquid seeps into the internal components. Clean the protective frame and sample holder as well, removing any residual sample or stains.

Maintenance of Interfaces and Cables: Keep the RS232 communication port and printer interface clean and dry to prevent dust or oxidation from interfering with data transmission. Ensure power cables are organized and free from sharp bends or damage. The instrument supports a power supply range of 12V–240V; a stable power source must be maintained.

II. Periodic Maintenance: Precise Calibration for Stable Performance

Accuracy Calibration (Critical Step): Perform regular calibration in accordance with national standards. For routine use, verify the instrument every six months using a standard viscosity fluid, and have it professionally calibrated by an accredited institution annually. This ensures that any measurement error remains within the ±1% (full-scale) limit. When the instrument is used frequently or employed to measure samples with high viscosity or strong adhesion, the calibration interval should be shortened to ensure the accuracy of absolute viscosity measurements for Newtonian fluids and apparent viscosity measurements for non-Newtonian fluids.

Mechanical and Electrical Inspection: Check the operating status of the stepper motor weekly to ensure smooth and precise rotation. Inspect the rotor connection shaft for any looseness or wear to prevent irregularities in rotational speed (0.3–60 rpm). On a monthly basis, verify the integrity of the power adapter and electrical wiring. Ensure the operating environment is maintained at a temperature of 5°C–45°C and a relative humidity of ≤85%, in compliance with the instrument’s technical specifications.

Long-term Storage: When the instrument is not in use, clean it thoroughly. Store the rotors and accessories separately, cover the main unit with a dust cover, and keep it in a dry, cool environment free from corrosive gases. Power on the instrument for 10–15 minutes once a month to prevent the aging of electronic components and ensure the stability of the microcomputer control system.

III. Industry-Specific Considerations

Grease/Detergent Industry: Focus on removing residual grease during cleaning to prevent contamination of subsequent samples, which could compromise the accuracy of low-viscosity measurements.

Paint/Coatings/Adhesives Industry: Promptly clean off highly adhesive samples to prevent them from sticking to the rotor or causing unstable rotational speeds, thereby ensuring stable measurements across a wide range.

Pharmaceutical/Plastics Industry: Strictly adhere to cleanliness requirements—ensuring no residual cleaning solvents remain—and maintain a compliant calibration frequency to guarantee that high-precision testing meets industry quality control standards.
